Ricky rakes it in
A few weeks ago we were presented with the spectacle of the Illinois governor, Rod Blagojevich, being punished after getting caught with both hands and at least one foot in the cookie jar. At the time, I checked out Rod's hairdo and noticed its similarity to the one displayed by Ricky Perry, our homegrown cookie snatcher. Based on a story in today's Chronicle , it seems like expensive haircuts are not the only thing Rod and Ricardo have in common.

The Specter of Republicans past
Not much has been happening in the news this week, if you disregard the usual wars, epidemics, and economic catastrophes. On the domestic political front, Senator Arlen Specter of PA announced he was switching parties and will apparently join the pivotal Blue Dog Democrat bloc, where he will potentially have some influence.
Among conservatives, the Specter decision has produced reactions that fall more or less along two lines. One group is glad to see him go, since he was entirely too liberal anyway. The other is furious about what they perceive as betrayal, and quaking at the prospect of the Dems with sixty Senate seats.
I came across this article by David Frum that seems to be a reasonable analysis of the ramifications for the Republican party.

Hot babes in hats

According to the rah-rah cheerleader website for the teabaggers, there were about 750 protests with an attendance nationwide of possibly as many as 544,000 lost souls. The nonpartisan sources say it was probably more like 312,000, but whatever. For the sake of argument, let's go with the optimistic 544,000 estimate.
In the 2008 election, a total of 129,438,754 votes were cast for either Obama or Top Gun. Meaning the teabaggers, who are supposedly an important national protest movement, attracted roughly 0.42 percent of last year's presidential vote. Hell, they attracted less than one percent (0.91) of Ace's share. So let the teabaggers have their fun, but let's keep things in perspective.
My bro in Houston said the collective total brain energy of the Texas secessionists wouldn't charge a AAA battery. He might as well have been talking about the teabaggers.

My rant for Tuesday
Now we have a lunatic gunning down three police officers in Pittsburgh, at least partly because he's worried that Obama will confiscate his assault rifle ? Man, I'm getting fed up with this shit.
The Republicans are not capable of governing this country effectively, and they aren't even capable of shutting their goddamned mouths while someone else tries. Total wastes of space. Load 'em into boxcars and ship their asses to Idaho.
There, I've gotten it off my chest. For tonight, anyway.

K. Parker and I agree
Kathleen Parker: Dumbed down by infomania
It isn't only Too Much Information, but the pitch and tenor of delivery that have us in a persistent state of psychic frenzy. From cable news to microblogs to the latest – Fox Nation – life's background music has become one prolonged car alarm.
The link leads to a column by Kathleen Parker. Generally, Parker and I are on opposite sides where political matters are concerned. Sometimes she'll surprise me, though -- as in her columns last year criticizing Trig's mom. All in all, she's one of a small number of conservatives I can tolerate in limited doses.
In the column, she writes about the corrosive effects of the information overload we're currently experiencing. I tend to agree with her point, and am finding that I need regular opportunities to cool down. After reading page after page of evangelunical tirades on the two "Big E" issues (Embryonic stem cells and Evolution), I realize I definitely need a break.

Today's exercise in conservative intellectualism and masterful prose, provided for your amusement without commercial interruption. A view of the future that may be to (sic) far over our heads to understand ? Maybe, but I understand that Texas has more than its share of idiots.

Summer walks in Texas
Judging by the amount of water on driveways and sidewalks and in the street, some Texans seem to think you can grow concrete and asphalt using lawn sprinklers.
